Activities in Cape Town: Scuba Diving

Scuba Diving in Cape Town is challenging but extremely rewarding. The waters off the Cape Peninsula shores teem with spectacular marine life.

A short drive from our luxury hotel over Constantia Nek brings you to the village of Hout Bay which offers an abundance of scuba diving operators and some of the best dive sites in the Cape.

Cape Town Scuba Diving Highlights:

• Excellent scuba diving in Hout Bay Harbour
• An abundance of spectacular marine life
• Two wrecks close to each other in the Hout Bay mouth

There are numerous superb dive sites in and around the Hout Bay Harbour. Be warned though, the waters of the Atlantic Ocean can be extremely cold!

The wreck of the Katsu Maru lies in a protected position, and is ideal for those wanting a more challenging, deeper dive. The Katsu Maru is an Oriental trawler that sank in the 1970's in Hout Bay. She remains virtually intact and is situated in the middle of the mouth of Hout Bay. You definitely need to take a torch along for this dive to illuminate all the colourful sponges and invertebrates. It is a short boat trip from Hout Bay harbour to the dive site.

The Aster was a retired east coast lobster catcher that was to be towed in for scrap. It was decided to sink her next to the Katsu Maru to extend the artificial reef there. She was stripped and cleaned of her oil and a lot of effort was made to make the Aster as diver friendly as possible. All hatches and doors were removed to allow safe and easy access for those experienced divers who want to enter the wreck. She was sunk in August 1998 and fortunately came to rest in an upright position on the sand quite close to the wreck of the Katsu Maru.

There are numerous other dive sites close to the harbour, ideal for all levels of diving experience.

Please note that the scuba diving activities are for guests staying at The Constantia.
